The higher education landscape in the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is one of the most densely ranked systems in the world: a large share of its universities appear in every major table, which makes cross-system comparison unusually informative there.
Where a British university's position differs sharply between systems, the cause is normally indicator weighting, particularly the balance between reputation surveys, research volume and internationalisation, rather than a change in the institution itself.
How United Kingdom appears in the major ranking systems
GURI reads the published results of QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and ShanghaiRanking (ARWU) and converts each published position into a percentile against that system's own published table size before combining anything. That is why a position of 501–600 in a table of 1,500 is not treated as equivalent to 501–600 in a table of 1,000.
Across the 102 ranked institutions in the United Kingdom, the average GURI Score is 65.95 and the median is 67.53. The gap between an average and a median is itself informative: a median well below the average means a small group of institutions carries the country's strongest results.
Coverage, how many of the three systems an institution appears in, is reported separately on the country table, because appearing in one system and being absent from another is a fact about the ranking system's inclusion rules as much as about the institution.
