The higher education landscape in Jordan
Jordan's higher education sector combines long-established public universities with a large private sector that expanded rapidly from the 1990s onwards. Because the public institutions carry most of the country's doctoral training and research output, they are the institutions most likely to meet the inclusion thresholds that global ranking systems apply.
For prospective students, the practical consequence is that a Jordanian university's absence from one system rarely signals weakness. It more often reflects size, disciplinary mix or whether the institution submits data to that system at all.
How Jordan appears in the major ranking systems
GURI reads the published results of QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and ShanghaiRanking (ARWU) and converts each published position into a percentile against that system's own published table size before combining anything. That is why a position of 501–600 in a table of 1,500 is not treated as equivalent to 501–600 in a table of 1,000.
Across the 19 ranked institutions in Jordan, the average GURI Score is 42.47 and the median is 40.55. The gap between an average and a median is itself informative: a median well below the average means a small group of institutions carries the country's strongest results.
Coverage, how many of the three systems an institution appears in, is reported separately on the country table, because appearing in one system and being absent from another is a fact about the ranking system's inclusion rules as much as about the institution.
