The higher education landscape in the United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates has built its higher education capacity quickly, mixing federal universities, emirate-level institutions and international branch campuses. Several of its universities are young by the standards of the systems that reward accumulated prize and alumni records.
This matters when reading results: ranking systems weighted towards historical achievement treat recent institutions conservatively, while systems weighted towards internationalisation and reputation tend to register Emirati progress sooner.
How United Arab Emirates appears in the major ranking systems
GURI reads the published results of QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and ShanghaiRanking (ARWU) and converts each published position into a percentile against that system's own published table size before combining anything. That is why a position of 501–600 in a table of 1,500 is not treated as equivalent to 501–600 in a table of 1,000.
Across the 13 ranked institutions in the United Arab Emirates, the average GURI Score is 61.11 and the median is 68.79. The gap between an average and a median is itself informative: a median well below the average means a small group of institutions carries the country's strongest results.
