The higher education landscape in Egypt
Egypt operates one of the largest higher education systems in the region by enrolment, and its publication output has grown substantially. Volume-sensitive indicators reward that growth, while per-capita and reputation indicators move more slowly.
Because the country has many institutions with differing research intensity, the spread between its strongest and weakest ranked universities is wider than in smaller systems.
How Egypt appears in the major ranking systems
GURI reads the published results of QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and ShanghaiRanking (ARWU) and converts each published position into a percentile against that system's own published table size before combining anything. That is why a position of 501–600 in a table of 1,500 is not treated as equivalent to 501–600 in a table of 1,000.
Across the 33 ranked institutions in Egypt, the average GURI Score is 40.48 and the median is 38.09. The gap between an average and a median is itself informative: a median well below the average means a small group of institutions carries the country's strongest results.
Coverage, how many of the three systems an institution appears in, is reported separately on the country table, because appearing in one system and being absent from another is a fact about the ranking system's inclusion rules as much as about the institution.
Leading institutions in Egypt under the GURI 2026 methodology
The American University in Cairo, Cairo University and Ain Shams University occupy the highest national positions in this edition. Positions reflect the published GURI 2026 methodology only. A different set of indicators or weights would produce a different order, and GURI does not determine which university is objectively best.
