The higher education landscape in Turkey
Turkey has expanded its higher education sector quickly, with many public universities founded in the last three decades alongside long-established institutions in Istanbul and Ankara. Publication output has grown accordingly.
Because much of the sector is young, results are often stronger in volume-sensitive research indicators than in reputation surveys or prize-based measures, and coverage across the three systems varies considerably between institutions.
How Turkey appears in the major ranking systems
GURI reads the published results of QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and ShanghaiRanking (ARWU) and converts each published position into a percentile against that system's own published table size before combining anything. That is why a position of 501–600 in a table of 1,500 is not treated as equivalent to 501–600 in a table of 1,000.
Across the 81 ranked institutions in Turkey, the average GURI Score is 33.71 and the median is 24.59. The gap between an average and a median is itself informative: a median well below the average means a small group of institutions carries the country's strongest results.
Coverage, how many of the three systems an institution appears in, is reported separately on the country table, because appearing in one system and being absent from another is a fact about the ranking system's inclusion rules as much as about the institution.
Leading institutions in Turkey under the GURI 2026 methodology
Koc University, Istanbul Technical University and Middle East Technical University occupy the highest national positions in this edition. Positions reflect the published GURI 2026 methodology only. A different set of indicators or weights would produce a different order, and GURI does not determine which university is objectively best.

Comparing universities in Turkey
A single ranking position answers only one question: where an institution sits inside one table. For a decision, compare component scores, coverage across systems and the trend across editions, alongside factors no ranking measures, programme fit, language of instruction, fees, location and graduate outcomes in the field you intend to study.
Which university is better depends on the student's or institution's priorities. GURI provides comparative ranking intelligence rather than determining which institution is universally better.
