Global Percentile & Top 1% Worldwide
GURI benchmarks every ranked university against the global higher-education baseline of approximately 21,500 institutions reported by UNESCO and the World Higher Education Database (WHED/IAU). This page explains the methodology and lists the universities in the world's Top 1%.
How Global Percentile is calculated
A university's Global Percentile expresses its GURI rank as a share of all higher education institutions worldwide, not just those that appear in international rankings. This contextualises a ranked position against the full global population of universities.
Approx. ranks 1–215. Universities of global academic excellence.
Approx. ranks 216–1075. Leading international research institutions.
Approx. ranks 1076–2150. Globally recognised universities.
Baseline source. The denominator of 21,500+ institutions is informed by UNESCO and the IAU World Higher Education Database (WHED), which catalogues recognised higher education institutions worldwide. Appearing anywhere on the GURI list already places a university well within the global Top 10%.
