What ARWU measures
ARWU's indicator set has been broadly stable since 2003, which is unusual in this sector and one reason it is widely used for long-run comparison. It counts prize-winning alumni and staff, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, publications indexed in major citation databases, and per-capita academic performance relative to institutional size.
Every indicator is drawn from external databases rather than institutional submission or survey response. That design makes ARWU results hard to influence and slow to move, and it explains why ARWU positions are the most stable of the three major systems from edition to edition.
- Quality of education: alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
- Quality of faculty: staff winning those prizes, plus highly cited researchers.
- Research output: papers in Nature and Science and indexed publications.
- Per-capita performance: the above normalised by academic staff size.
What ARWU deliberately does not measure
ARWU carries no teaching indicator, no employability indicator and no internationalisation indicator. It does not survey academics or employers. An institution can be excellent at educating undergraduates and still sit low in ARWU, because ARWU is not measuring that.
The indicator set also favours particular disciplinary profiles. Prize counts and Nature and Science papers concentrate in the natural sciences and medicine, so comprehensive science-heavy universities are structurally advantaged over strong institutions specialising in social sciences, humanities, law, business or professional education.
Scale and age effects in ARWU
Because several ARWU indicators are cumulative counts, institutional scale and institutional history both raise scores. Prize-based indicators in particular reward a long record: an award made decades ago still contributes.
This shows in GURI's own data. The median founding year of ARWU-ranked institutions in the 2026 index is 1927, against 1971 for GURI-ranked institutions absent from ARWU. Younger institutions are not weaker; they have had less time to accumulate the quantities ARWU counts.
The ARWU edition cycle
ShanghaiRanking publishes on a different annual cycle from QS and THE. The GURI 2026 edition uses QS 2026, THE 2026, ARWU 2025, and labels the ARWU results with their own publication year rather than the GURI edition year. Any source that presents an ARWU edition under a different year is misstating the data.

How GURI uses ARWU results
GURI converts each published ARWU position into a percentile against ARWU's own published total, exactly as it does for QS and THE, then feeds that percentile into the GURI 2.0 composite. Under the Best-Two Ranking Achievement model, when an institution is ranked by all three systems only its two highest percentiles enter the 66% Achievement component, so a single structurally unfavourable source result does not dominate an institution's standing.
The ARWU result still counts in full towards Ranking Coverage and towards the Inter-Ranking Consistency Index, because being assessed by three independent systems, and the degree to which they agree, are both meaningful.
