Why position alone hides improvement
The indicators that drive global rankings — citation stocks, reputation, research volume — change slowly. An institution can improve substantially in absolute terms and move only a few places, especially in the crowded middle of the distribution where many institutions sit close together.
Momentum makes that improvement visible. Instead of asking where an institution stands, it asks how its standing has changed, using normalised percentiles so that movement is not distorted by changes in table size between editions.
How momentum is derived
Momentum compares an institution's normalised achievement across recent published editions and rewards sustained improvement rather than a single favourable year. Consistent upward movement across editions produces a stronger momentum contribution than an isolated jump.
Where an institution lacks sufficient historical data — typically because it has only recently entered the ranking sources — no momentum points are awarded. GURIndex does not impute a value, so the maximum attainable score is correspondingly lower and the gap is reported in the institution's breakdown rather than concealed.
Rising universities
GURIndex publishes a dedicated rising-institutions view built on momentum, which surfaces institutions improving fastest across recent editions regardless of their absolute position.
For applicants, a rising institution may offer a stronger trajectory than a static higher-ranked one over the length of a degree. For institutional leaders, momentum is the closest thing the sector has to a feedback signal on whether a strategy is working.
Why momentum is only 5%
Momentum is volatile. Methodology revisions by publishers, changes in table size and one-off data effects can all produce movement that does not reflect institutional change.
Capping momentum at 5% means it can differentiate institutions and highlight trajectory without allowing short-term noise to reorder a ranking built primarily on measured standing.
