Why national context changes the picture
An institution placed in the global 400s can be the strongest in its country, the main destination for domestic research funding and the clear national leader on citation impact. On a global list, none of that is visible. National ranking restores the context that most applicants, employers and ministries actually operate in.
National context also matters for interpretation. Systems differ in size, funding model, language of instruction and research intensity, and those differences shape what any individual institution can achieve. Reading an institution against its own system is usually more informative than reading it against the global top 20.
What each country page shows
Every country page is built from the same indicator set as the global ranking, presented at national scale.
- National rank and GURI Composite Score for each ranked institution.
- Ranking Achievement and Ranking Coverage shown separately, so evidential strength is explicit.
- Per-source results from QS, Times Higher Education and ShanghaiRanking, each labelled with its edition year.
- Institutional Legacy and Institutional Momentum, distinguishing established from rising strength.
- Search and filtering, so large systems with many ranked institutions remain navigable.
From country rankings to system rankings
Country pages describe institutions within a country. A separate question is how the country's system performs as a whole — and a system with many moderately ranked institutions may serve its population better than one with a single global star.
GURIndex publishes Higher Education System Rankings for this purpose, combining average GURI Score, system representation, average institutional legacy and system excellence. Countries with no institution ranked in the current edition sources are marked as not currently ranked rather than being scored on absent data.

Because no institution in that country appears in the ranking sources for the current edition. Rather than score a country on absent evidence, GURIndex marks it explicitly as not currently ranked.
